The 150th Anniversary of the Birth of George Desvallières

In the light of this anniversary it seemed appropriate to take further steps to make Desvallières' work better known and to disseminate an image worthy of his many talents, artistic as well as personal. For this reason we set up the George Desvallières Endowment Fund in December last year. The aim of this fund is to make the artist better known to specialists in the art world and to a broader general public.

Encouraged by the inclusion of Desvallières' paintings in several recent exhibitions, following the publication of our book George Desvallières et le Salon d’Automne in 2003, we are about to embark on organising Exhibitions devoted entirely to the artist. Several projects are currently under way, in particular the exhibition marking the centenary of the First World War (1914-1918). Consequently we hope to create a wider recognition of this great artist.

Thanks to our website created in October 2010, we are continually receiving new information regarding Desvallières and this allows us to make progress with the Catalogue Raisonné which is our main priority. In close consultation with our editor, the publication of this major opus is scheduled before 2014. In addition, we aim to publish simultaneously the trilogy:
George Desvallières et le Salon d’Automne (Somogy 2003, réédition).
George Desvallières et la Grande Guerre.
George Desvallières et l’Art Sacré.

“We shall seek our technical and material guidelines from such modest artists, initially unknown, as Millet, Corot, Delacroix, Monet, Sisley and, more recently, Vuillard and Bonnard. We shall address ourselves to them because they were brave enough to open wide the windows of their studios and to let penetrate inside the marvellous radiance of the sun and of life.”

George Desvallières, « Propos sur l’art religieux moderne »,
(Interview on Modern Religious Art), March 3rd 1934.
